BIG SOCIETY STRETCHES FROM ACROSS ATLANTIC TO TORBAY

It was all hands on deck at a care home for disabled people in Brixham when big-hearted US Navy staff set about volunteering while their ship is anchored off Torbay.

The team of around a dozen sailors wielded paint brushes and garden tools at the Leonard Cheshire home, Douglas House, as they tackled much-needed maintenance jobs.

The crewmen are from the forces support ship the United States Naval Ship Second Lieutenant John P Bobo, which was in the bay from July 17th  to 25th.

The ship carries equipment and supplies for US Marine Corps forces in Europe, to be delivered rapidly ashore when needed.

The squadron is commanded by Navy Capt RW Polk and is staffed by military and merchant mariners as well as civilian personnel.
The second ship in the squadron, the LCPL Roy M. Wheat, will remain in the Mediterranean.

The name Bobo has an illustrious history. It belongs to a US marine Vietnam war hero 2nd Lt John P Bobo.  He died aged 24, trying to defend his comrades, despite being seriously injured himself. He was posthumously given a string of bravery awards, including the Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor.

The voluntary work of the hands on his namesake ship will be much appreciated. Among the jobs on the list to be done are sanding, painting, cleaning and weeding.

Membership Development and Marketing Officer Eloise Elson of CVA Torbay helped to set up the project between the US Navy and Douglas House.  CVA Torbay provides support to local voluntary and community groups and volunteers. Eloise said: “This project captures the true ethos of volunteering and shows that the Big Society can cross continents! We are very grateful to the sailors for taking on this work which will be of great benefit to everyone involved with Douglas House, particularly the residents.” Our thanks also go to Torbay Taxis, who in true community style are providing the transport for our American visitors to and from Douglas House.
