Devon Music Collective forges ahead with new schemes for young people.  The team provides an update in its own words. “Recently the DMC has been consulting with the children and young people who access the project. We've had some really interesting discussions and now we're collaborating with different groups of young people to create a set of projects that inspire and get them to believe in themselves and their ability to affect the change they need to determine their own bright futures.

With a 'can do' approach and providing intensive mentoring and guidance,  the projects see young people as teams and individuals making their own ideas happen taking on every aspect from community engagement, planning, developing and logistics to PR, marketing, delivery and business and financial planning.  The idea is that they will see what they can achieve, know that anything can be possible and have the confidence to come together to form their own supportive cooperatives around common interests to create enterprise for the future.

If you are working with young people aged 14 and above who would like to get involved - there is lots to do and we would love to have them on board!

AGATHA'S CLOSET

"Agatha’s Closet is an idea that gets young women together to explore who they are, who they want to be and where they fit in. It’s building girl centric projects where there’s loads of fun to be had and skills to be learnt in the things you know and the things you’ve yet to discover. It’s challenging stereotypes and beliefs and raising aspirations beyond that line to choose brilliant assertive futures. It’s participating with local communities to create a positive culture where everyone can dare to dream. It’s recognising girl power.."

Agatha's Closet is about to open a SHOP and we need some volunteers to help get it started. It's going to sell lots of interesting, unique and vintage clothes, shoes, accessories and jewellery as a dress agency, as well as give a platform for artists and designers to showcase the their own work. It’s giving young women retail, financial and business management experience as well as doing a really good thing as 50% of every sale will go into a pot that creates the projects that young women want to get involved in in the Bay - ideas on the table include Bright Star - a promotions label for young female musicians and Ragwalk - a fashion industry project that wants to take you through all aspects of textile and fashion design to modelling inspirational creations! If you have a couple of hours to spare, during the day, after school or on a weekend come in and see us and see how you can make it happen!

BESIDE THE SEA

The aim of the Beside the Sea is to fill Paignton up to the brim with music for one weekend in June. It’s a community event with 4 stages, lots of venues and a whole host of activities with something for everyone. Its being run by a group of young people aged 16 - 24 who are currently between jobs and is funded by the Job Centre as an "into work" initiative. Covering all tasks from booking the bands and belly dancers to licensing, health and safety and child protection its a really steep learning curve but we're having a lot of fun along the way.

It’s a massive task so we're looking for more young people aged 14 and above to come down and help out.

RADIO

We're about to start a brand new radio station for young people and the community by young people. It will be youth led and whilst it has music at its core we suspect it won’t take long for an eclectic mix of programmes to develop. So, strictly open to under 25's only if you're working with anyone who wants to be the next Zane Lowe or Fearne Cotton or if you'd like to discuss how we can work with different groups to create their own radio shows then please get in touch.

Contact – 07794 001049  for any info on the above projects or pop into our new shop next to the Pharmacy at the bottom end of the Crossways in Paignton - we have lots of tea!

Hope to hear from you soon!!

Kind Regards

Mark, Aly and the DMC Crew. “
