Blood Borne Virus Training             1 day course  1st November 2011 

Aim

To increase knowledge and understanding of HIV and Hepatitis. The day will focus on: transmission, prevention, testing, issues for people living with HIV and Hepatitis and challenging discrimination. 

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe and explain what HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are and how they can be transmitted  
  2. Describe and explain practices which reduce risk of blood borne virus (BBV) transmission  
  3. Have an understanding and a critical awareness of testing issues  
  4. Have explored myths around BBV’s and developed skills to challenge discrimination and stigma  
  5. Reflect on personal, societal and cultural issues towards people living with HIV and/or Hepatitis B and C

Different Strokes South West                    1 day training               8th November  

Aim

This course will give participants a basic introduction to the issues to consider when working with LGBT people and to reduce health inequalities experienced by LGBT people. It also features a brand new, original DVD produced by Kushbai, the LGBT youth group in Torbay. 

Learning objectives

  1. Understanding of the social and cultural context of LGBT people
  2. Awareness of LGBT people’s health and wellbeing needs, with a particular focus on people in the South West
  3. Explore measures that health, educational and social care services can implement to help reduce health inequalities and positively engage with LGBT individuals  

HIV: everybody’s business             ½ day seminar            15th November 

What is HIV? What is it like to live with the virus? Is there treatment available? Being aware of HIV is the first step in taking action 

Aim

To provide an opportunity to raise awareness of HIV and HIV services in the South West 

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand what HIV is and how it can be transmitted
  2. Explore some common myths and stereotypes that exist around HIV
  3. Have a greater awareness of current HIV statistics, treatments as well as information about the work being done by The Eddystone Trust in the South West
  4. Have a greater awareness and understanding on this year’s World Aids Day campaign
  5. These seminars are designed to precede World Aids Day and there will be an opportunity to order FREE World AIDS Day campaign materials (1st December)
