‘Volunteering Celebration wrapped in sunshine’
Last Saturday saw the 2nd annual Celebration of Volunteering in Torbay & the sun shone brightly with spirits running high. The event organised by CVA Torbay & held in Union Square hosted over 24 local organisations who work with volunteers & members of our community; all of whom were able to raise the profile of the valuable work they carry out here in the bay.
Mayor Nick Bye officially opened the day, accompanied by newly crowned Miss Torbay Fredrika Wright and her lady in waiting Atlanta Vowden. Following the introduction to the day, Mayor Nick visited the various displays with the award of ‘Best Dressed Display’ going to the Cats Protection Torquay & District Branch
Members of the public were treated to an oriental Lion Dance & martial arts weaponry display courtesy of Temple Gym and Martial Arts Centre. Hundreds of people filled the square throughout the day to enjoy the entertainment which included performances from musical theatre students from Coombeshead College, Thai dancing, Belly dancing, face painting and Clowns.
Organisations who attended the event reported to have found the day very productive in raising awareness of their work and encouraging people to get involved with volunteering. One of the groups present on the day said they had given out over 300 volunteer leaflets and were delighted at the number of people who had shown an interest in their work. Volunteers, many of whom were actively involved in the stalls were also treated to a goody bag at the event containing numerous small gifts by way of thanking them for their continued contribution to volunteering. Also included in the goody bags was information about the re-launch of this community web portal.
Great thanks go out to all who attended the event and supported the local voluntary sector in Torbay; plans are already a foot to mark National Volunteers Week 2011.
