JustPeople recruits, trains, vets and allocates volunteers to a wide range of agencies working to reduce reoffending in the Devon & Cornwall Probation Trust area.

Our volunteers have a huge diversity of experience, skills and qualifications. Some volunteer alongside their paid employment; some are students; others are unemployed and seeking to add valuable skills and experience to their CVs.

JustPeople volunteers carry out a range of roles, including:

  • assisting statutory criminal justice agencies in offender management
  • mentoring in the community
  • transporting offenders in rural areas, or offenders with disabilities, to appointments
  • supporting a range of specialist projects such as court advice desks; adult literacy support; skills for life projects and resettlement support

What to expect if you volunteer with JustPeople

  • A foundation training package providing an introduction to the criminal justice system; your role as a volunteer within it; and the basic tools you will need to support offenders and those affected by their crimes
  • specialist training modules for more advanced roles such as mentoring
  • a criminal records bureau check. If you have criminal convictions yourself, that need not rule you out, but we do not consider anyone for a volunteering role if less than a year has passed since the end of their sentence or court order
  • risk-assessed volunteering opportunities. We are committed to ensuring our volunteers are not exposed to unnecessary or inappropriate risk
  • ongoing contact and support to ensure your volunteering role is appropriate and rewarding
