The Community Lengthsmen

Torbay Council and Tor2 have had a mini re-launch of the Community Lengthsmen scheme. The Lengthsmen visit each Ward area for 2 weeks out of every 8, mainly performing routine tasks such as sign cleaning and weed spraying, but they are capable of much more.

The Lengthsmen is a modern version of an old system, when each area had its own lengthsmen who looked after a ‘length of road’. It’s been operating since August 2009 and has already started making a difference.

The great thing is we get to give them a list of things to do! To help promote the service to the Community, Tor2 have produced posters outlining the kind of tasks performed in the hope of raising more awareness and therefore increasing the number of tasks carried out that will directly affect Wards and improve the outlook of each area.

Each Community Partnership should have a Lengthsmen Coordinator (details below) who takes in suggestions from residents and businesses in their area and passes them onto the Lengthsmen Team.

Give the co-ordinator a call or an email on the below details and let them know what your suggestions are. The Lengthsmen do the following tasks-

Minor repairs to bins, straightening and securing signs and replacing missing letters on street nameplates
Cleaning of signs and litter bins.
Cleaning of debris and overgrowth along lanes, edges and channels.
Cleaning overgrown areas and removal of rubbish.
Cutting back hedges, shrubs and embankments from Council property.
Removal of weeds and moss.
