Advanced Apprenticeships and Foundation Degrees
The Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) as part of the Youth Workforce Reform Programme are funding a number of schemes around the country about new entry routes and training opportunities for people working with Children and Young People

There are 3 strands, of which Devon, in a consortium with Torbay and Young Devon have been funded to deliver two strands; the Foundation Degrees  and Advanced Apprenticeships.

Foundation Degrees There are 12 places available, 4 will go to Torbay, 3 to Young Devon and the remaining 5 places will be available to Devon Youth Service Staff.  There is no restriction on age or previous educational attainment providing any degree a candidate already has is in an unrelated subject.  However, places may only be offered to staff who started with the Service after 1 September 2009.

Candidates will need to be employed for a minimum of 16 hours per week and this includes the time which is given to them to pursue their studying although it is accepted that they will put some of their own time into the studying.

Advanced Apprenticeships There are 15 places available on this programme, 4 will go to Torbay, 5 to Young Devon and 6 to Devon.  There is no restriction on age but apprenticeships are primarily aimed at young people aged 16-18 years of age.  However, it is understood that at this age it may be difficult for them to achieve the levels of competence required for a Level 3 NVQ It is anticipated that candidates will have attained 5 GCSEs at C or above or have achieved an NVQ level 2 in the same area.

Candidates will need to be employed for a minimum of 16 hours per week and this includes the time which is given to them to pursue their studying although it is accepted that they will put some of their own time into the studying.  They should receive a minimum of ₤95 per week but are more likely to be on the lowest pay scale currently in use for youth workers.  They can either be newly recruited for this scheme or the offer can be made to existing staff provided they did not start employment before 1 September 2009.

Fore more information see the full CWDC Briefing paper here

Recruitment for both programmes will start immediately and expressions of interest should be sent to Joe Elston as soon as possible. Joe Elston,   Principal Youth officer,Torbay Youth Service,Oldway Mansions, Paignton TQ3 2TE Tel.01803 208275 joe.elston@torbay.gov.uk

IDT Training & Education - Supervision: Who needs it?

The easy answer to this question is “everybody”! But that’s because we know how people feel, think and behave after engaging in a good supervision session!
Unfortunately, it’s something of a truism that the people who appear the most resistant to supervision and are somewhat reluctant to engage with it are often the ones who most need it?  Perhaps they have had a bad experience, or the word itself may be problematic; bringing images of oppressive treatment at the hands of an insensitive, overbearing manager?
Supervision as we understand it, is a regular and consistent meeting between two people, one of whom has more experience. It is a work-orientated process that aims to ensure the best outcomes for its service users by supporting, monitoring and developing workers in their roles.
At its best “effective supervision “ helps to provide insurance (quality assurance) for the organisation, its workers AND its service users. It promotes and develops individual skills and enhances open and honest communication throughout the workforce.
At its worst, it is a demoralising and bogus attempt at maintaining standards. Ineffective supervision is worse than none at all……..so we are told?
To get a better understanding of what we mean by effective supervision, follow this link to the full article  including some of the potential benefits and outcomes.
